Goodenia radicans
Goodenia radicans
Goodenia radicans, formerly known as Selliera radicans and commonly known as Shiny Swamp-mat or Swampweed, is a prostrate, creeping perennial herb native to Australia, New Zealand, and Chile. It thrives in moist to wet soils, often along water bodies, and forms dense, succulent mats by rooting at its nodes, making it an effective groundcover and soil stabilizer. The plant features shiny, bright green, spoon-shaped leaves ranging from 1–11 cm in length and 2–35 mm in width, arranged in erect tufts. Small, fan-shaped flowers in shades of white to mauve appear on stalks up to 5 cm long, blooming from October to April, adding a delicate beauty to wetland settings. Preferring full sun to full shade, Goodenia radicans is well-suited for bog gardens, riparian restoration, and stabilizing moist embankments. Recognized for its significant ecological role in limited local sites such as the Yarra Ranges Shire, this adaptable plant supports soil health, improves water quality, and enhances biodiversity in wetland and riparian environments.
