Rhagodia spinescens 'Aussie Flat Bush'
Rhagodia spinescens 'SAB01' PBR, commonly known as Aussie Flat Bush™, is a low-growing, compact form of saltbush native to Australia. This hardy shrub reaches approximately 30–50 cm in height and spreads up to 1 meter wide, making it an excellent ground cover for both inland and coastal landscapes.
The plant features attractive blue-grey foliage that adds visual interest to gardens and mass plantings. Aussie Flat Bush™ thrives in full sun to light shade and adapts well to various soil types, including heavy soils. It is highly drought-tolerant and can withstand frost temperatures down to -5°C, making it suitable for a range of climatic conditions.
For optimal appearance, annual pruning is recommended, especially if a manicured look is desired. However, in roadside or naturalistic settings, it requires minimal to no pruning. During establishment, watering is necessary for the first 8–13 weeks; thereafter, the plant relies primarily on natural rainfall. Applying chunky mulch and slow-release fertilizer in spring can further enhance its growth.
Aussie Flat Bush™ is ideal for erosion control on slopes, roadside plantings, and residential gardens, providing dense coverage that suppresses weeds and stabilizes soil. Its resilience and low-maintenance nature make it a valuable addition to sustainable landscaping projects across various regions, including Victoria.
