Ornduffia reniformis

Ornduffia reniformis

Ornduffia reniformis, or Running Marsh-flower, is a robust, perennial aquatic herb native to southeastern Australia, typically found in wetlands, swamps, and along the edges of shallow water bodies. This spreading plant forms mats of kidney-shaped, bright green leaves and produces vibrant yellow, lily-shaped flowers on tall stalks from spring to autumn, creating a striking display in wetland environments.

The foliage can be floating or erect, with circular leaves ranging from 3 to 10 cm in diameter, often lobed at the base, and dark green above with a paler or purplish hue below. Its vibrant yellow flowers, numerous and lily-shaped, sit on erect, branched flowering stalks and measure 20–40 mm across. Flowering occurs from October to March, adding seasonal brilliance to shallow freshwater wetlands. This species thrives in waterlogged soils or shallow water up to 60 cm deep and is predominantly found in the southern parts of Victoria.

Running Marsh-flower prefers full sun to partial shade and is ideal for wetland restoration, riparian plantings, and water gardens. Its mat-forming habit helps stabilize soil and improve water quality by filtering sediments. Additionally, its flowers attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, supporting local biodiversity, while the dense foliage provides excellent habitat for frogs, small native fish, and invertebrates.

With its lush foliage, brilliant flowers, and ecological benefits, Ornduffia reniformis (previously Villarsia reniformis) is a valuable addition to wetland rehabilitation projects, biodiversity-focused landscaping, and water-sensitive garden designs, serving as both a functional and ornamental feature species.
