Melicytus dentatus

Melicytus dentatus

Melicytus dentatus, or Tree Violet, is a dense, small shrub native to southeastern Australia, commonly found in woodlands, forests, and riparian zones. Growing up to 3 meters tall, it features fine, narrow green leaves with toothed edges and produces small, pale yellow, tubular flowers in spring, followed by tiny purple to black berries. These berries are a valuable food source for native birds.

Tree Violet thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade, as well as a range of conditions including drought and frost. Its dense growth makes it an excellent choice for habitat restoration, wildlife corridors, and erosion control, providing shelter for small animals and nesting sites for birds.

With its ecological benefits, resilience, and subtle ornamental appeal, Melicytus dentatus is a versatile and functional addition to native gardens, revegetation projects, and sustainable landscaping.
