Leptospermum scoparium
Leptospermum scoparium
Leptospermum scoparium, or Manuka, is a hardy, dense shrub or small tree native to Australia and New Zealand, commonly found in woodlands, coastal areas, and wetlands. Growing up to 4 meters tall, it features small, aromatic leaves and profuse, showy flowers in shades of white, pink, or red, blooming from spring to early summer. These nectar-rich flowers attract bees, making Manuka a key plant for honey production, including the famous Manuka honey.
Manuka thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade. It is drought-tolerant and withstands poor or sandy soils, making it ideal for erosion control, revegetation, and native gardens. Its dense foliage provides shelter and habitat for small birds and insects, enhancing local biodiversity.
With its ornamental blooms, adaptability, and ecological importance, Leptospermum scoparium is a versatile and visually appealing choice for sustainable landscaping, habitat restoration, and honey-focused plantings.
