Juncus procerus

Juncus procerus

Juncus procerus, or Tall Rush, is a robust, clump-forming perennial rush native to Australia, typically found in wetlands, along waterways, and in seasonally inundated areas. Growing up to 2 meters tall, it features upright, cylindrical green stems and small, clustered brownish flowers that bloom near the stem tips in spring and summer, creating a strong vertical presence in wetland landscapes.

Tall Rush thrives in waterlogged soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade, making it ideal for wetland restoration, riparian planting, and erosion control. Its extensive root system stabilizes soil, filters sediment, and improves water quality by trapping pollutants. The dense foliage provides valuable habitat for aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife, including frogs, insects, and small birds.

With its height, resilience, and ecological importance, Juncus procerus is a practical and visually striking choice for biodiversity-focused landscaping, wetland rehabilitation, and water-sensitive garden designs.
