Juncus amabilis
Juncus amabilis
Juncus amabilis, or Hollow Rush, is a clump-forming perennial rush native to Australia, typically found in wetlands, riparian zones, and seasonally damp grasslands. Growing up to 1 meter tall, it features upright, slender green stems with delicate brownish flower clusters appearing near the stem tips in spring and summer, lending a soft, elegant presence to wetland landscapes.
Hollow Rush thrives in moist to waterlogged soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade, making it an excellent choice for riparian planting, wetland rehabilitation, and erosion control. Its dense, fibrous root system stabilizes soil and filters sediment, improving water quality in aquatic ecosystems. The plant also provides habitat for small wildlife, including frogs, insects, and aquatic birds.
With its graceful appearance, ecological contributions, and adaptability to wet environments, Juncus amabilis is a valuable addition to biodiversity-focused landscaping and sustainable wetland restoration projects.
