Duma florulenta (syn. Muehlenbeckia)

Duma florulenta (syn. Muehlenbeckia)

Duma florulenta, or Tangled Lignum, is a robust, multi-stemmed shrub native to Australia, commonly found in floodplains, wetlands, and along watercourses. Growing up to 2 meters tall, it forms dense, tangled thickets with slender, wiry branches and small, scale-like leaves. This plant produces inconspicuous greenish flowers, followed by tiny fruits, and is well adapted to survive in both waterlogged and seasonally dry conditions.

Tangled Lignum plays a critical ecological role, providing habitat and nesting sites for birds, including the endangered Australasian Bittern, and shelter for small mammals and reptiles. It thrives in clay soils and tolerates full sun, making it an excellent choice for wetland restoration, erosion control, and biodiversity-focused projects.

With its dense growth habit and ability to stabilize soil in wetland areas, Duma florulenta is a valuable species for enhancing ecological health and creating wildlife habitats in natural and rehabilitated landscapes.
