Dodonaea viscosa ssp. Cuneata
Dodonaea viscosa ssp. Cuneata
Dodonaea viscosa subsp. cuneata, or Wedge-leaf Hop-bush, is a resilient, fast-growing shrub native to southeastern Australia, commonly found in woodlands, rocky outcrops, and arid regions. Growing up to 2 meters tall, it features wedge-shaped, slightly sticky green leaves and distinctive winged seed capsules that turn reddish-brown as they mature, adding seasonal color to the landscape. Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in spring, providing a nectar source for insects.
This subspecies thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates full sun to partial shade, as well as challenging conditions such as drought and frost. It is ideal for erosion control, windbreaks, and habitat restoration projects, where its dense growth provides shelter and food for native birds and insects.
With its adaptability, low-maintenance nature, and ecological benefits, Dodonaea viscosa subsp. cuneata is a practical and attractive choice for native gardens, revegetation projects, and sustainable landscaping.
