Dianella tasmanica

Dianella tasmanica

Dianella tasmanica, or Tasman Flax-lily, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial herb native to southeastern Australia, often found in moist forests, woodlands, and riparian areas. Growing up to 1 meter tall, it features broad, strap-like green leaves and striking, star-shaped blue to violet flowers with yellow anthers, blooming in spring and summer. These are followed by vibrant, metallic-blue berries that add ornamental interest and attract birds.

Tasman Flax-lily thrives in well-drained to moist soils and tolerates full sun to deep shade, making it highly versatile for a variety of landscaping applications. Its dense foliage is excellent for understorey plantings, erosion control, and low-maintenance gardens. The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, while the berries provide a food source for seed-dispersing birds, enhancing biodiversity.

With its bold foliage, stunning flowers, and ecological benefits, Dianella tasmanica is a versatile and attractive choice for native gardens, habitat restoration, and sustainable landscaping projects.
