Dianella caerulea 'Lucia'

Dianella caerulea 'Lucia'

Dianella 'Lucia' is a low-growing, spreading perennial from the Asphodelaceae family, known for its deep green foliage and resilience. Reaching 30–40 cm in height and approximately 50 cm in width, 'Lucia' forms a dense ground cover, making it ideal for mass plantings along roadsides, median strips, and borders.

In spring, 'Lucia' produces deep mulberry flower buds that open to reveal purple flowers sitting high above the foliage, followed by attractive purple berries in summer. This flowering display adds seasonal interest to landscapes.

Adaptable to a range of climates, 'Lucia' thrives in both coastal and inland areas. It tolerates full sun to part shade and is suited to sandy loam to clay soils, though it should be avoided in very poor soils. The plant is drought and frost-tolerant, handling temperatures down to -7°C with minimal leaf burn. Its multiple rhizome shoots ensure excellent coverage and quick recovery from damage.

For optimal establishment, water 'Lucia' as required for the first 8–13 weeks. Plant in a well-mulched garden, ensuring the crown or base of the plant is not below soil or mulch level. If necessary, apply slow-release fertilizer in spring. Pruning back to half the height every 4–8 years will help maintain its appearance, with more frequent pruning resulting in a tidier look.

'Lucia' is recommended for planting densities of 4–6 plants per square meter or 2–3 plants per linear meter, providing an effective, low-maintenance ground cover solution.
