Dianella caerulea 'Breeze'

Dianella caerulea 'Breeze'

Dianella caerulea 'DCNC0', commonly known as Breeze® Dianella, is a robust, clump-forming perennial from the Asphodelaceae family, specifically bred by Ozbreed for its tidy appearance and resilience. Unlike common Dianella varieties that develop tall, messy canes prone to falling, Breeze® Dianella maintains a neat form without above-ground canes. It reaches approximately 60–70 cm in height and width, making it suitable for mass plantings and grassy gardens.

This cultivar thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts well to a variety of soils, provided they are not very poor. It tolerates humidity, cold, and is moderately drought-tolerant, though it requires adequate watering during the establishment phase and through the summer months, especially in regions like Western Australia and South Australia. The plant's underground rhizomes spread effectively, filling gaps and outcompeting weeds, which also makes it beneficial for erosion control.

In spring, Breeze® Dianella produces delicate blue and yellow flowers, adding subtle ornamental value to landscapes. For maintenance, it's recommended to water as needed for 8–13 weeks until established, plant in a well-mulched garden using chunky mulch, and ensure the crown or base of the plant is not below soil level. If required, apply slow-release fertilizer in spring. Every 3–8 years, cutting back the plant to one-third of its height can rejuvenate its appearance, with more frequent pruning every three years yielding optimal results.
