Carex iynx
Carex iynx
Carex iynx, commonly known as Tussock Sedge, is a densely tufted perennial sedge native to southeastern Australia. It typically grows up to 40 cm in height, with stems ranging from 20 cm to 1 meter in length. The leaves are longer than the flowering stems, measuring 3–6 mm in width, and feature dark yellow-brown sheaths that persist as fibrous remains at the base.
Flowering occurs from September to April, producing pale yellow-brown flower heads that are 20–45 cm long, comprising 1–5 densely flowered spikes per node. The upper spikes are typically male and short-stalked, while the lower spikes are female or mixed and borne on long, drooping stalks.
Carex iynx thrives in fertile alluvial soils within depressions of floodplain woodlands and prefers semi-shaded environments. Its dense, tussock-forming habit provides excellent cover for various species, including small mammals, and contributes to the ecological health of wetland areas.
