Billardiera scandens

Billardiera scandens

Billardiera scandens, or Apple Berry, is a versatile and hardy native Australian climber or scrambling shrub, commonly found in heathlands, woodlands, and forests from coastal areas to the subalps. This slender plant features twining stems with silky, hairy new shoots and leaves that mature into glossy, narrow, elliptic shapes. Its pendulous, pale yellow to greenish bell-shaped flowers bloom throughout the year, followed by sweet, edible, purplish berries that are highly attractive to birds and other wildlife.

Apple Berry thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates both sun and partial shade, making it an excellent choice for growing under established trees or training on trellises. Its delicate twining habit and ornamental fruit make it a delightful addition to native gardens, where it provides habitat and food for pollinators and birds.
