Solanum aviculare

Solanum aviculare

Solanum aviculare, commonly known as Kangaroo Apple, is a fast-growing native shrub to small tree, typically reaching 2–4 meters in height. Recognised for its lush, lobed leaves that are reminiscent of the paw of a kangaroo that inspire it's common name, and striking purple star-shaped flowers, it adds vibrant colour to landscapes through spring and summer. These flowers are followed by orange to red egg-shaped fruits or 'apples', which are attractive to birds and wildlife.

This hardy species is widely used in bush regeneration and revegetation projects, particularly for its ability to quickly establish and provide shelter in disturbed or degraded areas. Its dense foliage offers valuable habitat for small birds, while the fruit provides a food source for native fauna. Kangaroo Apple thrives in a range of soils and tolerates full sun to part shade, making it a versatile option for ecological restoration, windbreaks, and native gardens.
